aan MAILBOX TOXIC HOWE SOUND DELICACIES MLA Reynolds offers ‘inanities’ Dear Editor: With reference to John Reynolds’ appointment as Minister of Environment and his puerile verbal flippancy in issuing an in- vitation to the public to join him in eating crabs at Howe Sound tendered inedible due to poisonous Santa Fund says thanks Dear Editor: tf the West Vancouver Santa Claus Fund were to count up all the blessings received during the past 50 years it would be faced with an impossible task. So many people have opened up their hearts and pocket books to help their neighbors in need of a little assistance. This year the number of food and toy hampers reached an ail- time high — 251 food hampers and 181 children who received toys. The 100 per cent cooperation received from the North Shore News was an essential part of our successful project. Another important part was played by our West Vancouver firefighters, who are always ready and willing to help. Our volunteers, who truly devoted many hours of their time, provided the last, but most essen- tial, part. To all of you the West Van- couver Santa Claus Fund extends a very sincere thank you. Let us keep alive this feeling of caring and giving during 1990, and perhaps we may all enjoy a happy and peaceful New Year. Ruth Stout, executive officer West Vancouver Santa Claus Fund PM called to save mudflats OPEN LETTER TO PRIME MINISTER BRIAN MULRONEY We, the 100 plus members of the Canadian Federation of University Women, North Vancouver, strong- ly desire the preservation of the last remaining North Shore estuarine wetlands habitat, that is, the Maplewood Flats. This 130 hectares of wetlands and wild reclaimed foreshore is federal crown owned. Maplewood Mudflats is only five per cent of the original wetland-estuary shoreline on the North Shore of Vancouver’s Bur- tard Inlet. It is also all that is left of this priceless natural habitat — a unique nature study area, a Walden Pond type retreat, and a potential tourist magnet. An order-in-council by you and your cabinet to transfer the Maplewood Flats area from the Vancouver Port Corporation to the Nature Trust of British Col- umbia would accomplish _ this preservation for us and for future generations of Canadians. I ask Mr. Reynolds to offer valid reasons to the people as to why he has abstained from actively denouncing the collective ploy of the pulp and paper mills for flooding the waters with over- powering quantities of deadly ef- fluent. In startling contrast to his premiership aspirations, Mr. Reynolds is, by virtue of making a mockery of his duties concerning preservation of our environment, far better suited to function as co-host of a modern version of the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.
