BusINnEss 2TR: COMPETENT READING TUTORS Company matches English majors with ‘tearning disabled’ students A READING tutor program developed six years ago by an Ontario high school teacher is now available locally through North Shore-based 2TR:Competent Reading Tutors. Don Jones, an English teacher at Kenner Collegiate Vocational Institute in Peterborough Ontario, originally developed reading pro- grams to help students who he found were reading at a Grade 5 level in high school. Said Jones: ‘‘I started dealing with learning disabled-labelled kids. I knew that I couldn’t max- briefcase Michael Becker imize their potentials because they needed one-on-one education.’’ Jones refined his approach to teading education by incorporating & peer tutoring method. He went on to train advanced-level academ- ic students who received credits for becoming reading specialists. The peer teachers instruct one-on-one for 40 minutes a day. Nine Ontario schoo! boards have bought into the program. Jones says that when he began the pro- cess of marrying the skills of his enriched English students with the needs of his ‘learning disabled’* students, he had no intention of parlaying the venture into a business.
