Attempted murder trial ordered A 42-YEAR-OLD man of no fixed address was ordered Wednesday in North Vancouver provincial court to stand trial in B.C. Supreme Court on a charge of attempted murder. Eugene Ernest Harland was originally charged in connection with a July 17, 1988 incident in which North Vancouver RCMP Cst. Carl Cavaco was stabbed during an early-morning altercation. The police officer was investigating a complaint of a suspicious male in the Bridgman arca of North Vancouver. Cst. Cavaco, who has since recovered, was stabbed twice during the fight, once in the left shoulder and once in the arm, and the alleged assailant was shot in the chest. Harland is now paratyzed below the waist and remains confined to a wheelchair. He elected to be tried by a judge and jury, but no trial date had been set to press time Friday. Arson suspected im $750,000 blaze ARSON is suspected as the cause of a fire which extensively dam- aged the West Vancouver home of Giovanni Zen and family early Feb. 10. The fire is believed to have started in the garage of the home located at 1275 Chartwell Crescent. The fire caused an estimated total of $750,000 in damage to the house, the garage and a Rolls Royce and sports car parked in the garage. Firefighters arrived to battle the blaze at approximately 4 a.m. after Zen noticed smoke, evacuated his family and called the fire department fiom a neighber's home. The family escaped without injury, but (wo firefighters were hurt while working to douse the fire. The investigation by West Van- conver Police continues. Police seek murder informant NORTH VANCOUVER RCMP are attempting to contact a tipster who provided police with information a year ago regarding an ongoing 13-year investization into a North Vancouver murder. The body of Brenda Rosemary Young, 38, was discovered in the rear of her 200-black Lonsdale Avenue business, The Good Farth, Jan. 7, 1976. The informant is asked to contact Cpi. Fred Rainer Deutsch was originally charged in connection with Aug. 11, 1988 incidents in which a truck belonging to imperial Parking Ltd. wes stolen and a msle and female injured after two vehicles were hit. Appearing before Judge J.D. Laytoa, Deutsch was sentenced to jail terms of two years tess a day and one year, which will be served concurrently, and placed on probation for two years. He also had his driver's licence suspended for 10 years.
