N. Shore Arts Commission inaugural meeting holds its THE NORTH Shore Arts Com- mission started the ball rolling to promote arts in the community with its recent first inaugural meeting. AH three North Shore municipalities recently approved the 13-member commission to co- ordinate support and development of the arts in the community, something the North Shore Cul- tural Policy Committee has been working to develop since 1986. Commission chairman Judy Dennis lauded the Arts Commis- sion, calling it a model for other municipalities to follow. ‘Never before has there been such a momentus thing for the North Shore,’’ said Dennis. ‘‘The commission’s efforts will affect the quality of life of the community.”" The commission will act as the “nerve centre’’ through which all North Shore arts groups and agen- cies will be directed,’’ said Dennis, and work towards implementing the North Shore cultural policy plan, which contains some 92 Strategies in the areas of pro- gramming, facilities and ad- ministration. In the past, arts groups seeking funding from any three North Shore municipalities have received varied amounts of funding and have had to battle through a tangle of bureaucracy. At the meeting a committee was struck to investigate creating a Standard granting cvstem for ail arts groups on the Nori Shore. Local choreographer Judith Marcuse said she is convinced the commission will provide better coordination of the arts. “I’m extremely hopeful that the commission can make a difference 4 Wheel Brake Package (MOST CARS} Sp speninF 99° opeci: inctudes clutch, disc, release bearing & labour (pressure plate extra charge) Most 4. 6, 8 cyhinder cars Most 4 cylinder Japanese cars inciuding Dat- sun, Toyota, Mazda, Honda, Volkswagen, Rabbits and Beetles MLR EF 725 W. 14th NORTH VANCOU ER Special tnstalied eau ewan ae we ewe nme acaenevee nod a ean wana nee = 1o the way things have been run in the past,”’ she said, adding that the most important thing the commis- sion can do is to raise conscious- ness of the arts on the North Shore and facilitate the level of public activity in the arts. She said she hopes that through the work of the commission, an arts centre on the North Shore will one day become a reality. The commission, to meet mon- thly, includes: North Vancouver District Ald.
