‘FEDERAL ELECTION ."83 Be BARRIE HEWER WESTERN INDEPENDENCE PARTY © Personal: 41 years old. Hewer works as a counsellor for the Children’s Foundation. © On Free Trade: The party believes voters are getting a free trade snowjob from the three major parties. Free trade is being used to hide the issue of our hor- rendous national debt. The free trade deal should have gone to a national referendum. Believes tariffs will have to be lowered for Canada to survive into the 21st century. We should turn trading eyes to the Pacific Rim rather than to a country carrying a huge debt load. © On Environment: Although the local environment is still rela- tively clean, people must realize that we're not passsengers in this world. We've reached the stage where we have to become custo- dians. ‘issue of choice: Fair repre- sentation in Parliament. You have to go to Ottawa with 2 strong statement. A vote for the Western Independence Party BRIAN SMITH COMMUNIST PARTY (MARXIST-LENINIST) © Personal: 43 years old. Smith is an accountant currently com- pleting computer studies at the Langara campus of Vancouver Community College. © On Free Trade: The party stands for self-reliance in the economy, full sovereignty in cul- tural and social affairs and for a society in which there is rio ex- ploitation of man by man. The party is opposed to free trade. © On Environment: The main issue in the election and after- wards is both social and natural environments. Society must create an environ- ment fit for human existence on the basis of our own efforts. ® Issue of choice: The election itself: A farce so brazen that electors are reduced to being mere spectators to act as voting cattle. The politicians of the three major parties present one face during the election and another after. They cannot be trusted. The workers and the progressive and democratic forces must not accept this state of affairs.
