8 ~ Sunday, Sanuary 17, 198K - North Shore News ENGLISH LESSON Tall trees a menace Dear Editor: My wife and I] were visiting in the south of England when the great stornt (the ‘worst in living memory" the newspapers stated) struck in the early morning hours of Oct. 16. We were staying with friends at Oxted, 15 miles from Gatwick Airport, and were awakened at 4 a.m. by a noise that sounded like a jet taking off but which turned out to be a 100-mile-an-hour wind LANE SAFETY tronring past the gables of the old house. Later in the morning when the wind and rain had subsided we were able to see same of the dam- age that had been caused. Several large trees had been uprooted in the neighborhood and huge bran- ches ripped off and sent fying. Most of the damage had been caused by trees falling on houses and iautomobiles and powerlines, and many areas remained without power for three days or more. MAILBOX Returning home to West Van- couser we could not help but notice how many tall trees we have here and wonder about the damage that would be caused if these started coming down in a 100- mile-per-hour gale. Hots 25 years since we have had a storm of any significance so the chances are reasonably good, We also checked our insurance policy, Alec Uydens West Vancouver Speeders cause concern Dear Editor: Regarding the problem of speeding vehicles using back lanes as short cuts, | would like to add my concern to the recent article in the North Shore News by Maureen Curtis. \ It is of great concern to many of the residents of the .2300 block of Bellevue Ave. and Marine Dr. whose properties back onto the lane shared by these residents. It is a onatural playground for the children in this areca and there urea considerable number of older peo- ple who use the lane for shopping and entry to their homes, IMPAIRED Ardagh Hunter I have already spoken to Mr. Lanskail by phone in respect to this issue at which time I suggested the possibility of speed bumps be- ing the answer, but he indicated that it would be against the law to install speed bumps on a public thoroughfare. Why cannot this lane be in some way barred against through traf- fic? And could this suggestion be put to the traffic committee? Alternatively, as suggested by Mr. Ed Guy, a barrier put in the mid- dle of the lane to stop through traffic may be a shitable deterrent.
