32 - Friday, November 20, 1987 - North Shore News Chamber music layed in WV THE NORTH Vancouver-based Ramcoff Concert Society shows are well under way this season, with the group’s Fifth Season con- cert series starting this weekend. This season marks a new direc- tion for the group, which this year is hosting more concerts than in earlier years. ‘We've got 65 to 70 concerts going this season,'’ ex- plained artistic director and clari- netist Gene Ramsbottom. This weekend will see the start of the Fifth Season chamber music series in West Vancouver featuring varied pieces by Ravel, Haydn and Eliot Carter, Next month, the society begins 2 series of concerts at the conference centre at Whistler Village, perfor- ming works Dec. 19 from Weber, Haydn and Prokofiev. A move to take the concerts to where the West Vancouver con- cert-goers spend a good portion of winter leisure time, the Whistler concerts run to next year. Ramcoff’s popular free Out For Lunch concert series at the Van- couver Art Gallery is well-attend- “RE-ELECT ed, ‘‘usually standing room only,” according to Ramsbottom. Performed every two weeks, the next Out For Lunch concert is Dec. 4 with the Vancouver String Quartet and Ramsbottom perfor- ming in the one-hour series. The group Pacific 1, 2, 3 per- forms Nov, 23 at the free Lunch & Listen concert series at the B.C. Tel building in Burnaby. Other shows are on a regular basis. Pacific 1, 2, 3 also performs at the Fifth Season opening, which is Nov. 2] at the West Vancouver Presbyterian Church and is free to students [8 and younger. ‘We're trying that experiment (of free admission to students) as part of our commitment of trying to (further) develop an audience,”’ added Ramsbottom. “It also inmakes a nice alter- native. We're hearing visitors say that Vancouver is starting to rival San Francisco for many cultural events,'’ he said. In years past we have printed roughly 2000 extras copies.
