Reducing class
size is costly

A letter in Mailbox of the
North Shore News would
have us believe that smaller
classes give better education.
There has been a lot of work
done on the subject of class
size, without definite con-
clusions being reached. A
recent study by Dr. Shapson
of S.F.U. demonstrated that
class sizes between 16 and 37
made little difference to the
pupils. A figure of ten was

ic soup’’ spill here - en-
couraged, not by the spill of
course, but by the fact that
the occurrence was given
headlines in the News.

The first step in handling
any problem is the ability to
face it, to admit that it ex-
ists. For far too long the fact
of pollution in our area was
simply ignored.

Jesse Burkhead of Syracuse
University is quoted as say-
ing, ‘‘Where a reduction in
class size may make for no
improvement at all, a reduc-
tion from thirty to ten MAY
produce extremely = signifi-
cant gains. We will never
know until we try.’’

Unless the letter writer can

prove his claims, the local
taxpayer is not likely to be
willing to pay out the extra
six thousand dollars a year
for cach pupil — which
would be necessary to reduce
the average class size to ten
pupils, Such an increase
would amount to EIGHTY
FOUR MILLION
DOLLARS FOR NORTH
VANCOUVER alone.
