8 mailbox DK] Loitering dogs not a job for police Dear Editor: While glancing through an old copy of your paper I came across ‘‘WV dog con- trol just police PR’’ by L.S. Prytulak (14 Sept). After I stopped laughing, it occurred to me that Prytulak might just be serious. It seems that Prytulak observed a dog ‘‘loitering’’ and reported this matter by phone three times with no visible result. The problem here is readily apparent, as the report was made to the West Vancouver Police. Does Prytulak really believe that any police agency is, or should be, prepared to respond to a call of a ‘‘loiter- ing’’ dog? What exactly does Prytulak suggest the con- stable do?.1f the dog is friendly and cooperative, it might be persuaded to hop into the back of a police car. But then what? The next citizen invited to sit back there might be a little disturb- ed at coming away covered in dog hair or worse. And what if this loitering Thanksgiving a time to count good things Dear Editor: . Our government has set aside one day each year as a special time of thanksgiving to the Creator for His abun- dam goodness — for His bounty which we can use, en- joy, and share. We may differ greatly, one from another, in our way of giving thanks, but we can acknowledge the good we have seen during the past year, and open our eyes to see more good around us, and for us, in the future. If we are to help deepen the recognition and appreciation of God’s loving provision, don’t we — each one of us — need to look for and acknowledge, with thanksgiving, what God has given us? If this dog had _ been presenting an actual and im- mediate threat to anyone’s safety, there is no doubt the police would have responded. However, based on Prytulak’s own description, it is very hard not to categorize the complaint as stupid. Prytulak’s totally unreasonable expectations of the West Vancouver police are unfortunately represen- tative of a growing segment of the population who feel the police are responsible for every problem, personal or otherwise, reported to them. Any failure on the part of the police to promptly and per- manently rectify these pro- blems is seen as a justified opportunity to ridicule and criticize. One of the roles of the police in our society is to act as a referral agency.
