Howver, it’s sull uncertain how many of Canada’s 19 best soccer players will be allowed to play for their country. Despite promises that they would be, several Canadian players have yet to be freed from their North American Soccer League commitments for the game. Canada’s team is as follows: Goalkeepers — Tino Lettieri, Chris Turner; Defenders lan Bridge, Bobby Lenarduzzi, Craig Martin, Colin Miller, Terry Moore, Bruce Wilson; Mid- fielders — Pasquale Deluca, Gerry Gray, Paul James, Wes McLeod, David Nor- man, Randy Ragan, Mike Sweeney; Forwards — Ken Garraway, Dale Mitchell, Gymnasts lose GYMNASTICS lost a good friend and associate with the death of Mr. Victor Hartley of North Vancouver who died May 6. The NASL asked for advance warning in future, in order that league games could be scheduled around interna- tional matches to ac- comodate that national team. The NASL was informed by the C.S.A. of the Italy match in autumn 1983, more than six months in advance and four months before the NASL schedule was set. New York, Tampa Bay, Min- nesota and San Diego all play on the same date. Tulsa and Chicago play the night before, and Golden Bay the day after the Canada/Italy game. It’s a two-game North American tour for Italy, which meets the U.S. Na- tional team at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, friend honor bestowed on Gladys in 1975 and Vic in 1980. Victor, who built his own house tn North Vancouver, enjoyed travel and fishing. He attended as a spectator the Munich and Montreal Olympics. N.J., on May 30. There are no NASL games scheduled May 29, 30, 31. The C.S.A. has named the Canadian Team, knowing full well that some of the players are unlikely to play. The reason for that goes back to the Scotland series in June 1983. When the team was an- nounced for the Scotland series last summer, there were notable absentees who would have been selected had their clubs prepared to_ release them. Consequently, some players were unsure about the Status with the National Team. Tony Waiters states ‘‘It is important that our best players know that they are wanted, even if in the end we are unable to get ahold of them. It is very unfortunate; however, I do not wish to get invovied publicly at this par- ticular time in such a con- troversial issue’’ Adding to the significance of the Canada/Italy match is the fact it is being carried live by the CBC national net- work, starting at 3:00 EDT. It’s also being televised live back to italy. “Ie ll be an indication of our progess,’”’ says Waiters. The next time Canada’s Olympic World Cup team in the Olympic tournament, scheduled for July 30. Corner Kicks: There’s still a possibility that Vancouver’s high-scoring Carl Valentine will play for Canada... Olym- pic team officials informed Valentine that he shouldn’t expect to be named for the Olympic finals if he doesn’t make himself available for the Italy game next week... With Czechoslovakia’s withdrawal from the Olym- pics, hopes of a Canada/Czechoslovakia pre- tournament game have been abandoned and an invitation to play in Canada in July has been extended to France... will assemble will be a few days before its opening game Czechoslovakia won the Olympic gold.
