COMPUTERS June 5, 1983 DOROTHY GENTLEMAN SECTION FASHION - FOOD TRAVEL New book for NV poet DOROTHY CORBETT Gentleman has had two notable achievements in the past year. In August of 1982 she and her husband Bill celebrated fifty years of marriage, assisted by their two daughters, six grandchildren, and a host of friends. In November of the same year, her second book of poetry, Ring of Years, was published by South Western Ontario Poetry. Mrs. Gentleman's first book, If Time Should Stop. is in its second printing. Her poems and short stories have appeared in over a hundred literary magazines in Canada and the United States. She has been listed in Interna- tional Who's Who in Poetry, Cambndge, England, and The World Who's Who of Women. Though born in Boston, Massachusetts, the poet grew up in West Vancouver and has contributed to the literary scene since her early teens, when her poetry ap- peared in jocal newspapers. Her poems express her love of life and her desire to com- municate her feelings to the world. As she says, “I like to create a delicate balance between reason and im- agination ... 1 try to com- municate with a depth of feeling, to evoke an emotion and arouse a mood with sensory images.” She depends on in- spiranion to “lift the veil of realism” and make the world of the imaginabon more real than reality, Many of her ideas come at night and she rushes to clutch the in spirauon and pin it down before st can escape She remembers waking one night with a line running through her mind “Please take this robe and wear wt well” In spiration fell on fertile sol, and soon the poem = had COMPUTER TRAINING CENTRE (NO SALES) - Can Save you Money & Time! Mrs. Gentleman helped produce a British Columbia magazine called 60 or Better for senior citizens, acting as a member of the board and contributing poems = and short stones. She also acts as an Associate Editor of Pierian Spring, a small but prestigious magazine published by the Pierian Press of Brandon University. The recipient of many honors, she 1s an Honorary Life Member of World Poetry Day and a member of Amencan Poetry League, Amenican Poets Fellowship Society, Christan Writers League and Stella Woodall Poetry Society. Whereas If Time Should Stop compnses poems writ- ten in traditional style, with even meter and Iine-end rhymes, Ring of Years is less formal and uses internal speech rhythms. The’ early images seen through the eyes of youth have given place to a search for the meaning of life and the paradoxes in- herent in living. The poems pulse with emotion and feel- ing, not stated but implied. Mrs. Gentleman has said it best in her essay Writing a Poem: “Let your imagination run wild — reach for the stars, climb a ladder to the moon and listen to the sing- ing of angels.” Editors have had high praise for Mrs. Gentleman's poetry. In the words of the editor of The Letter Box, Brooklyn, N.Y.. “her work has beauty and depth,” while the editor of Dnftwood East, Pawtucket. R.I., finds her poems “lovely and delicately written.” She is currently writing at the height of her powers and has completed several new poems since her book was published. It may not be long before we see a new book from the pen of this prolific writer. Keep Canada yr Beautiful OVER 37,000 PROFESSIONAL HAIRCUTS Now that's worth taiking about!
