A a CONTRACT for what: will -be the largest commercially owned™ icebreakers in the world has ‘been awarded to Burrard Yarrows Cor- poration. - Two Class 4 icebreakers, which will become part of Gulf Canada Resources Ltd. quest for oil in the Beaufort Sea, will be built in the Vancouver and Victoria Shipyards of Burrard Yarrows. The contract is worth $79 million, with delivery of the vessels set for April, 1983. ‘Work will start in April, 1982. A contract for a $32 million Class 4 supply vessel was awarded to Vancouver Shipyards Ltd. as well. Burrard Yarrows gencral manager Tom Duncan said the contract is one of the biggest contracts the company has had. The boats will be 88 metres long, 17.5 metres beam and 10 metres deep, and will have 22,000 hor- scpower engines. They will cach require 300 man-hours for one year, with one to be built in the company’s North Vancouver and one built in its Victoria yard. Work on the new boat will dovetail with the compliction of another icebreaker for Dome Petrolcum, cxplained Duncan, so it will create little change in the current work force at the Vancouver yard. Burrard Yarrows scnior vice-president Don Challinor said caslicr the contract " was*going into the«service and attention I was getting.
