Not just a babysitting centre

Over the summer months, many families took
advantage of the excellent Day Camp program at

Neighborhood House in

North Vancouver, but

the seasonal day-time babysitting is but one of the
many functions being served by the United Way

agency.

There is daycare for three
to five-year-olds, after
school day-care for six to
twelve-year-olds and a
playground program for six
to twelve-year-olds.

In all these programs
children engage in a variety
of activities including sports,
woodwork, claywork,
music, crafts and out-trips,
depending on age and in-
terests.

-But the Neighborhood
House is not just for kids.
There is a mothers’ group
program in which a weekly
social morning is held for
mothers to participate in dis-
cussions, sports and crafts.
Guest speakers also attend
some of the meetings, which

'.take place while supervised
|-play is provided for the

children.

Every week there is a
family night held in which
activities for the whole

family are encouraged.

Seniors are not left out. A
social recreation program
featuring teas, card parties,
bingo, out-trips, dancing and
crafts, is also provided.

The house also has a home
visiting program for seniors
and those who have dif-
ficulty getting out. of the
home. Volunteers from the
house provide companion-
ship and held out with
grocery shopping and other
chores.

The house uses about 75
volunteers to assist its 28
trained staff members in
running the programs which
now serve about 800 people.

In addition to regular
programs there is family and
personal counselling
available from the qualified
social workers at the house.
