Dear Mr. Marcino: I wish to protest very strongly and strenuously the proposed increase in Janu- ary, 1977, for adult swim- ming at the North Vancouver Recreation Centre ; swimming pools. a An 83% (from 60¢ to an incredible $1.10) increase is — simply not justifiable consid- | ering the A.1.B. suggested current guidelines. When I asked a member. of the Recreation Centre how it could get away with such an abominable increase, I was told, point blank, that the A.1.B. has no jurisdiction over provincial and munici- pal services’ increases! That is truly amazing when you consider that the ordinary citizen in this country under- went a 9-10% increase in > ‘wages this year. Further- more, we have. had to put. up with enough of other - sizable increases, e.g. the ferries, car insurance and the like. Why are they immune to such blatant increases? For those people who consider daily exercise par- amount (and swimming is _one of the best!) and who can not afford a swimming pool in their. backyard, it is nothing short of ridiculous that we be confronted with such an increased cost. For a family in North Vancouver to use the swim- ming facilities, the amount that would have to be spent would almost equal the amount for a health spa or private club (which I, for one, cannot afford!), and the latter: places have consider- ably more facilities. At the very least, there | should be a family yearly ate. You had this feature a few years ago, but it was mysteriously dropped with- out any explanation. Il ask for a reappraisal of this outrage. - Donald W.M. Fraser North Vancouver IS VOUR CAR READY FOR WINTER DRIVING? - SAFEORIVING 1S AFAMILY.AFFAIR ° page 10 - December 15, 1976.- North Shore News Dear Editor: Picture 12:45 noon hour vehicular rush this past Wednesday. The freezing rain pelted unmercifully in the area of 1000 block, Marine Drive, West Vancou- ver. Two dogs ran recklessly towards Ambleside _ park against traffic. Travelling about four cars behind the scene, after walking my dog in the safety of the Eastern end of Ambleside, I was first aware’ of two lady _drivers in the centre lane, anxiety. concern and tears on their faces. It looked like a common “‘rear- ender” but alas, the first driver had struck the wee black and white spaniel, the other dog was confusedly trying to dodge oncoming cars. Besides the two afore- mentioned cars, another with a man and wife had stopped - and the man was bending over the pathetic animal shielding it from the rain. I placed my flashers on and checked to see if the animal was alive. He was. Racing madly to the S.P.C.A. a new employee and I returned in his private car to the scene, the other two vehicles being out on similar calls. The staff at the Shelter was there, efficient, willing and instant in response. Gently we transported the ‘dog, bleeding from the head onto a borrowed blanket from still another car and transfer- red him to the closest veterinarian. The doctor was in surgery at the time but attention was given the animal immediately. How many people shed tears for the spotted spaniel today. Ido not know, but one — cannot help but wonder if the. careless owner was one! _Mrs.. K.G. Griffiths West Vancouver Dear Editor: Your paper, from the very first, has had a definite leftish siant. Your pinko editorials leave no doubt about where your socialist sympathies lie. Why can’t you see that . communism is rotten? It leads to dictatorship and tyranny—and I fought ag- ainst both those things in World War Two. Do I now have to fight you, too? I dare you to ‘print this letter!
