And: while the turnout at the Leo Mar- shall. centre was not like the snowballing support that pushed Ross Perot to the forefront of national politics’ south of the borzer, Collis and candidate wanna-be Jeff ‘Jewell hit on many of the sentiments of the biilionaire Texan. Namely, give the people what they want. » Responsible government. Mel Hurtig — the founder of the. Na- tional Party — has written a number of books outlining the party policy. In one.. bevk, A New and Better Canada, he calls for the end of corporate and union con- “come = is tributions to political parties. He identifies the favors owed to these special interest groups, once their elected bagmen settle in- to power, as the root of many of our woes. Hurtig favors smal! individual contribu- tions and a systern whereby Canadians con- tribute one dollar on their tax form to a fund. The $18 million raised would then be divided amongst the contending parties. Such new ideas are what this country needs. . oo But what Hurtig and all aspiring usurpers of the reins of power must over- Canada-wide voter cynicism towards politicians. Few outside of party politics would dispute that the status quo requires a shaking. it is now up to the Hurtigs and Collis’ of the country to overcome our doubts. We wish them luck. Our “politics-of-inclusion’’ prime minister, Kim Campbell, is either incredibly stupid or an. unabashed hypocrite. And 1, for one, do not for a moment believe the lady is stupid, On June 25 the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench struck down as unconstitutional Ouawa's scan- dalous election gag law, Bill C- 114 — the law that can jail indi- viduals for five years if they spend more than $1,000 supporting a federal election candidate or par- ty. According to David Somerville, president of the National Citizens Coalition which spent $150,000 on the successful court challenge, Ottawa is appealing the June 25 ruling and, moreover, is quietly endeavoring to have the ruling stayed pending the appeal. Since the appeal process before the Alberta Court of Appeal will reportedly not begin before some- time in September, a stay of the June 25 ruling would leave the gag law in force AFTER the fall elec- tion is called — regardless of the eventual result of the appeal. Somerville doesn’t believe Ot- tawa can win an appeal. He thinks the government is simply desperate to try any measure to muzzle citi- zens during the upcoming election campaign. ‘*This is a law,’’ he says, ‘‘that should be in place in Iran or the old Soviet Union or some Third-World dictatorship.’’ Consider first the lesser charge of stupidity against the PM. it’s inconceivable that she would not know of the Alberta court’s quashing of the gag law. And since the law is political dy- namite just as she’s striving to give the Tories a new image of openness and ‘‘inclusiveness,’’ it’s KIM CAMPBELL... “inclusive” muzzling. DON BELL... back to distric hall? . ae HITHER AND YON equally inconceivable that an ap- peal and application for an in- terim stay of the Alberta court ruling would be made without her . approval. If the opposite WERE the case, her chief of staff and some gun-’ * jumping government lawyers ob- viously ought to be lining up / tomorrow morning at the focal employment office with their UI applications. So we’re left to conclude that Ms. Campbell indeed knows-ex- actly what is happening. She can “ only have decided that muzzling Reform Party supporters and other fringe groups capable of detracting from the Tory’ vote’ must take precedence this time over freedom of speech and any © passing public relations damage to. the new Tory image: .
