“NORTH SHOR HERITAGE by Dorothy Foster WIGWAM INN was built at the north end of Indian Arm inlet by the first owners: of the property, Benjamin Franklin Dickens and his business partner, Count Gustav Constantin Alvo Van Alvensleben. Dickens, who arrived in Van- couver in the late 1800s, had the grand dream of building a large Indian-theme chalet that would become a world-class resort. He became manager of his company, Vancouver Springs In- dian River Co., when it became evident that he did not have the financial resources needed to con- tinue with his dream, and took on Alvensieben as owner and finan- cier of the inn in £910. As owner, Alvensleben was able to bring in a good deal of money from Germany for their venture and the inn was opened in 1910 in a big extravaganza with 600 in- vited guests arriving by boat. The inn changed hands numerous times over the years and several owners attempted to make a go of it. It flourished from the mid-’20s through the mid-’40s, then hit another low point after that. In 1962, the RCMP raided it when it was being operated as a gambling casino.
