The North Shore Secondary Schools Athletic Association's (NSSSAA) West Vancouver ad- ministrative representative Ed Jackson said that as grade-point averages (GPA) for college entry are driven up, sports participation drops. “H's not at the junior level. It’s al the senior level, particularly senior boys,"’ he said. “We have to examine the issue."’ , He also suggested that removal of physical education from man- datory curriculum may have had some impact on sports participa- tion. ee ee WEST VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD by Kevin Gillies But Jackson pointed out that West Vancouver's success rate in athletics continues to be good, West Vancouver secondary schools won 22 of 59 NSSSAA championships (37%) over the fall, winter and spring schedules —~ well beyond their relative pep- ulation. Jackson was addressing the board on the state of athletics on the North Shore along with the Board adopts visitation policy PARENTS OR legal guardians should be permitted to observe their child’s class, according to policy recently adopted by the West Vancouver District 45 school board. The board passed a motion May 31 allowing class visitations, but it also set down guidelines and pvo- cesses for doing so. Parents or guardians wishing to visit a child’s elementary classroom should discuss it with the class teacher at least 24 hours in advance, Parents or guardians wishing to visit a secondary classroom should contact the school’s principal at least 24 hours in advance. The timing of the visit will de- pend upon: * the learning activity in progress; ethe degree of disruption to the class; ¢ the sensitivity of all students; © the number of requests; ¢ the urgency of the request. The motion also says that such requests for visitations shall not, be unreasonably denied. The trio also expressed concerns over a decline in volunteers and coaches, Funding cuts for uniforms and transportation have meant that fundraising and organizing are taking more time and effort from coaches than the actual coaching, Jackson said. He added that coaches don't get the recognition they deserve. Be- ing able to supply enough coaches for future programs is now one of the NSSSAA'‘s major challenges. He al said they want to make participa: .' parents more aware of what is sappening with school sports and get them more involved where possible, rackson asked the board to re- jserate its support for the NSSSAA's goals and objectives. | Adventure Travel ° Hiki Since 1979 at 201 .
