Esplanade, N.V., 1:30 - + p.m. November 28 In a recent issue of Maclean's magazine, report- ing on a survey of the health status of Canadians across the country, the North Shore has again come out as the healthi- est region in Canada. While we know that good health and a longer than average life expectancy are associated with higher income and education- al levels, Maclean’s says that we are more likely than other Canadians to live a healthy life style for a number of _ other reasons as well. Because we have such a great environ- ment, with lots of opportuni- ties to exercise outdoors (in spite of the rain), we look after ourselves and this results in what they call a “Fit For Life” attitude. Another thing - that helps us to have better North Shore Health, Esplanade, N.V., 1 132W. :30 - + p.m. health overall is the fact that we have a high proportion of immigrants living on the North Shore (31% of our res- idems). These new neigh- bours tend to be healthier because, when they come to Canada, they must be healthy to have good job prospects, which usually means they will have a higher income. However, when we look at details of the health status of North Shore residents, we compare favourably with every other part of Canada, except for cur death rates from pneumonia and flu. Dr. O’Connor says that this might be due to the fact that we have such a high propor- tion of older residents in our community.
