DOES the glass ceiling still exist? Do women still rise only so high in their chosen field before hitting the invisible barrier of male patriarchy? Certainly Canada has yet to enjoy a woman as prime minister, but local- ly we have seen women wearing. the mayor’s chain both North Vancouver District and West Vancouver. However, it is certainly true that politics seems to come easier to men. In all three North Shore munici- palities there are approximately twice as many male candidates as female running for office, West Van councillor Liz Byrd was furious after the unfairly influential West Vancouver Citizens for Good Government failed to include her on its list of recommended candidates — the only incumbent councillor not to get the nod. And she later wondered to the News about what prompted all the male can- didates to be asked to speak first at an all-candidates meeting: “We're still in the stone age in West Vancouver. Women are at the back of the room and the bottom of the list!” NORTH SHORE DEMOGRAPHICS YES NO 43% 36% 48% 33% inquiring reporter NO DON’T OPINION KNOW 2% 19% 1% 18% Laurice Martin Britannia Beach No I. don’r.
