For organizers, the words invoke visions of community spirit. the world’s attention and last- ing legacies. On Thursday afternoon ar Cheers Restaurant, it was the fatter group that took cen- tre stage as Arthur Griffiths offered his rendition of the proverbial “I have a dream” speech. Since selling his interest in the the Vancouver Canucks and Grizzlies last year, the 41-year-old sVest Vancouver businessman has become the point man on the Vancouver-Whistler bid for the 2010 Winter Games. “These Games have unlimited potential for all parties involved -— the community, education, transportation,” Griffiths said at the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce luncheon. “And not just for B.C., bur also for Canada.” Griffiths said the Games would generate a net surplus of in excess of $100 million and 15,000 jebs (not inciuding those required to upgrade transportation infrastructure} The Vancouver Whistler bid is compenng with Calgary, which hosted the Winter Games in 1988, and Quebee City to host the 2010 Winter Games. The key date is Now. 21 —- the day the Canedian Olympic Association (COA! decides which bid to hack. Onee the COA backs a city, the nexe key date will come in 2003 when the Invernational Olympic Committee decides on the site for the 2010 Winter Games. Tf successful, Griffiths and company will embark on answering a million litte questions — and a few big ones. The biggest? “The corridor to Whistler and the resolution of that issue,” Griffiths said of the suspect trans- portation link between the Lower Mainiand and the all-season resort town. “It's incumbent thar when we go to the international level that a deci- sion on the solution to the transportation to Whistler is dealt with in advance.” Another important aspect of landing the Games will be strong community support to host the international athletic competition, According to Griffiths, recent surveys in Whistler and Vancouver found that 83% and 82% of resi- dents respectively are in favor of hosting the 2010 Games. ‘SPECIAL SF algaecide to prevent “Free water testing .. The vailey is home to some of the world’s largest cld- growth fir and cedar trees. The demonstration forest, in which logging is allowed, is managed by the Greater Vancouver.
