For me I am fasci- nated by great port cities such as Sydney, Hong Kong, San Francisco, Rio de Janerio and of course Vancouver. I had seen them al except Cape Town, and so I went to Africa to fulfili a dream. Tr was to be the best way, to sail into Cape Town on a handsome ship, the Crystal Symphony. But first I had to get _to Mombasa in Kenya, which was an adventure in itself... flights by Lufthansa from Vancouver to Frankfurt and on to Nairobi, a stay at the famous Norfolk Herel, then ta Mombasa, a teeming, steamy city on the Indian Ocean with a dock that looks like Pearl Harbour the morning after. We sailed from Mombasa, ark-like, with a herd of giraffe carvings gatheved behind the purser'’s desk (the fist night they all had to go into a freez- er to kill bugs). I was luckier, unpacking in a spacious cabin with my own balcony. Heck, there was even CNN on the TV and a video player so I could watch Out of Africa. The wonderful thing about a world cruise is that there are plenty of relaxing days at sea (“shore excursions are exhila- rating but exhausting,” said one woman) when the ship can get into its stride and a man can develop a routine. Always breakfast on the stern deck, a visit to the library to exchange a book or movie, then the Bistro for one of Pascal's cappuccinos. Here the ship’s doctor is sitting with a lively group, while at a window table the hotel manager chats to a world cruiser. The world cruisers are about 150 our of 900, an interesting group because they : ns - a Experience the drama of the Panama Canal aboard the legendary QE2 from $2543.00 Cdn includes air and gratuities, Tl nights Fe. One of them, a European woman built like a galleon, sleeps naked on a hammock strung across her balcony. Well, so I heard. The passengers are a cut above the usual throng that bobs around the Caribbean, many of them sophisticated travellers who used to frequent the late, great Royal Viking Line. The captain and hotel man- ager are both RVL veterans. The world passengers are not poor, some paying as much as US$173,000 for a penthouse suite with butler service. But I also met a couple of teachers from San Francisco who were . doing the entire trip. I loved my ]2 days on the 50,060-ton vessel, built in Finland and in service for two years. Every night, of course, was a culinary treat with the choice of the elegant main dining room or Chinese and Italian restaurants (as the name suggests it’s crystal all the way, the linen is juse that, and Wedgwood a1 tea-time), then first-run movies and good entertainment ranging from production shows tu intimate performances by concert pianist Blair McMillen and Irish comedian Tony Cawley. And so the days slipped by, full of sunshine and good com- pany, and we sailed out of the Indian Ocean and around the Cape of Good Hope. There was Table Mountain, looking even more spectacular than any picture I had seen. A brass band played us in, Crystal Symphony wadged the dock, and we were there.
