blood lifting up closer to the
first few layers of skin.
When the blood is closer to
the skin, the skin becomes
oxygenized,

“Anything oxygenated
like an apple that is cut open
and feft on a counter turns
brown faster,” reasons
Delisle. “This is a really
basic simple theory.”

She adds that when oxy-
gen in the blood supply lifts
up through the layers of
skin it conditions aud mois-
turizes the skin.

Delisle points to tanning
products containing oxygen,
the Canucks hyperbaric
chamber — which uses oxy-
gen to speed recovery from
injury — and oxygen bars in
the East as further proof that
her idea isn't just hot air.

Of the 120 or so cus-
tomers a day that tan in her
tanning studio, 15 use oxy-
gen.

On Tuesday, one of those
15 was 18-year-old Dan
D’amici.

After his first 15-minute
‘session oxygen tanning,
D’amici said he felt fresh,
but a litte lightheaded.

ed to the oxygen machine.

“J figure the more oxy-
gen you get the more tan
you get” he said,

D'amici added he usual-
ly falls asleep while tan-
ning, but he stayed aweke
during his oxygen tan.

Delisle. the sole owner
of the nearly three-month-
old Hollywood — Tans,
charges regular oxygen tan-
ners $3.50 over the $4.40
tanning price. She currently
has two oxygen machines,
but after an influx of inter-
est after a BCTV news spot
and other media attention,
she hopes to add more.

However, according to
Taylor, more oxygen
machines won't help tan-
ners.

Simply going to a tan-
ning salon is wrong, he
says, adding that the extra
dose of ultraviolet light
received in sun-bed tanning
is harmful.

Also, indoor tanners
receive ultraviolet A, which
is, in a sense, a weaker type
than the ultraviolet B the
sun provides. But, Dr.
Taylor adds, ‘ultraviolet A
penetrates the skin deeper
and causes premature aging
of the skin.
