Dear Editor:

My name was Smuduye. I was
black and white and had a certain
charm.

| was born on March 17. 1986
(St. Patrick's Day in Expo year),
and was adopted by ‘my family
soon after.

J wasn'ta very smart cat, but 1

did my best. ! learned to po out-

doors when necessary, didn't

* scratch the furniture, carpets or

drapes, and liked to lie on a lap

and bury my head ia a loving

arm.

What | really liked most was
ta be outdoors, exploring my
yard and my acighbor's yards —
who knows what was to be found
there,

Weil, one day, just after you
had topped up the antifreeze, or
windshield fluid) in your car, 1
found something in your drive-

. way that tasted very sweet. [ had

a few licks and went home,
Very soon after I began to feel
_ sick, [ lost my appetite and didn’t
‘have much interest in going out-
side to explore.
~ After'a few days, | felt really
sick and had a difficult time find-

_ing my way around the house.

I just slept a loi, hoping to feel
better.

My family took me to the vet,
who had to put needles in me to
take some of my blood and urine
10 find out what was wrong with

‘me —— they had to give ine an
injection to make me sleepy to do

this because it was very painful.

When my family took me
home, [ was feeling even more
sick and had difficully geting
around,

I became very thirsty and even
though my family put down
bowls of water for me, | couldn't
find them.

T cried out through the night
and they brought the water to me.

On Manday, April 24, the vet
called ory family to tell them that

because | had taken a few sips of

the antifreeze, my kidneys had
been destroyed and that my life
could not be saved.

They took me, wrapped in my
favorite blanket. buck to the ani-
mat hospital. where | was put on
a cold table.

They held me while my front
paw was shaveu and something
sharp put in it. fe hurt.

I died at about | p.m. that day.
{ was only three years old.

Dear Editor:

Congratulations to the men and
women in the various Lower
Mainland councils who are consid-
ering implementing a total ban on
indoor smoking.

As expected, this proposed ban
has already brought out those who
claim that this is nothing short of
“Big Brother" and the “state” taking
away citizens’ rights and, of course.
they are joined by the “smokers’
rights” group which contends that
it’s a smoker's right ina tree society
to smoke.

After all, they say, tobacco is a
legal product and smokers have the
right to use tobseco the same as they
use any other legal product,

Vell, { beg to differ. First of all,
this ban, if it comes about, has noth-
ing at all to do with Big Brother.

lt will merely be the inevitable
result Of our society having allowed
the smoking minority to inflict harm
on the non-smoking majority for fir
too long,

Secondly, there is no question
that a person has the absolute right
to smoke — but not in a situation
where the exercising of that “right”
injures another person.

For example, a baseball bat is
also a “legal-for-sale” item,

Within reason, [ have the right to
swing that hat whenever and wher-
ever | please, However, my right to
swing it ceases the moment some-

No one in our society bas the

right to engage in an activity of any ,

kind that results in harat to someone
else,

It doesn’t take a genius to figure
this thing out. Good luck, councils,
