Said Oostindie, “We've focused on the native issues because the Commconwealth Games are happening this year. There has been a lot of discus- sion about how the Common- wealth is one happy family. We want to present the idea that the Commonwealth is not our com- mon wealth. + “Certain people in the Com- monwealth fave more wealth and more access to a higher quality of life. The First Nations people have experienced years of harsh oppression. We should acknowledge that.” Representatives of the Enupiat people of Alaska will also attend. Jeet Kei is a local hip-hop artist who raps about his experi- ences as a Chinese-Canadian. He incorporates Chinese language and Chinese samples into his music. . Said Oostindie, “White audi- ences think they know the black culture because of black hip-hop artists. When you think about the States there’s white culture and black culture. Nobody really rec- ognizes that there is an Asian culture. “Jeet Kei is talking about 100 years of Chinese history in Canada. The system hasn't enabled Chinese people to access mainstream culture. One of his main goals in rapping is reaching young people and say- ing Chinese people have been here for many years and he wants to share that with other young people,” he added. Tickets for the festival are a mere $7 and are available through CBO at 280-2801 er at record stores including Track, Scratch, Blast, Zulu, Highlife and Odyssey Imports.
