BUSINESS Small business growth continues * THE NUMBER of small businesses in Canada continues to grow. In 1989, the latest year for which statistics are available, there were a total of 932,000 businesses operating in Canada. Of these: 920,000 or 99% had fewer than 100 employees; 866,000 or 93% had fewer than 20 employees. Since 1979, there has been a 49% increase in the number of businesses registered in Canada. Businesses with fewer than 100 employees operated in these key sectors: business or personal ser- vices, 27%; retail trade, 16%; construction, 12%; primary in- dustries, 9%; community services, 8%; whoiesale trade, 6%; fi- nance/real estate, 6%; manufac- turing, 6%; and other, 10%, Tke economic impact of small business is seen in these statistics: @ Businesses employing fewer than 100 employees accounted for 37% of total private sector payrolls. @ in 1989, businesses with under 100 workers employed 47% of all Private sector employees. They also created 83% of net new jobs between 1988 and 1989. @ In 1988, firms with annual rev- enues of under $5 million ac- counted for 29% of total business sales in Canada. They also repre- sented 28% of profits and 19% of total assets. @ Two-thirds of the firms per- forming research and development (R&D) in Canada in 1988 employed under 50 workers. These firms accounted for 11% of Canada’s total R&D spending and tend to be concentrated in the machinery, chemical products, computer science and engineer- ing/scientific service industries. @ In 1987, there were 1,572 ex- porting manufacturers with less than $10 million in revenues, rep- resenting 46% of all Canadian exporters. Their share of total manufactured exports was roughly 0. Between 1988 and 1989, 166,000 new businesses were formed. This represents a birth rate of 18% (number of new businesses as a share of total number of businesses). Between 1988 and 1989, 140,000 businesses ceased operating (in- cluding firms that were solid, vol- untarily merged with another company, wound down by the owner as well as failures). This represents a death rate of 15%. Of businesses operating in 1979, 43% survived (were still operating) by 1989. The survival rate varied by in- dustry sector: 38% for business and personal services, 40% for retail trade and consiruction, 53% for manufacturing and 70% for community services.
