Sports Reporter “The North ‘Shore Thir- ty;Something Women’s Soccer League: has: just completed -their first summer season of games, and _the response by all those involved has been very exciting. .. «New players are asking to join = every.week,’’ said organizer Linda a “The interest on the ‘North Shore has been wonderful. ‘Yve even had enquiries from as far away as Burnaby.” ‘Fun, improved fitness, and new friends are the chief goals of the league. The average age of the : players is 36, ranging from 29 to ‘53, and over 50% are novices. “Thanks: to volunteer coaches ‘John Palmer of Palmer Soccer World, and John Jukes of Metro Vancouver Women’s ‘Soccer, the players: have: developed a variety ‘of soccer skills, making for com- petitive and fast-paced games. _. “Pm. amazed ‘at. how quickly -these women are picking up the skills,’? said Palmer. ‘‘They are learning faster than many groups I - have coached. Many of the women became in- volved in the league after wat- ching their own children enjoy the benefits of the world’s most popu- lar game. Some. joined just to show their kids they could do it. - This winter four teams-are play- ing on the North Shore; one from West Van, and three from North Van. It is hoped that other over- 30 women’s recreational soccer leagues will start up following the success of the North Shore League. At present the Metro Vancouver women’s league, open to any woman over the age of 18, is closely watching the progress on the North Shore.
