Its magic has tittle to do with the comedic trickery of A Midsummer Night’s Dream but pervades and surrounds the action as completely as the sea encircles the isle that has been home to Prospero and his daughter, Miranda, for 12 years. There is a feeling of compres- sion, of fractured time that is dif- ficult to achieve. Characters dream, sleep and trance until the “abysm of ume” ensnares not only the players but also the au- dience. At least it should. The fact that it does not cannot be blamed on the distractions of adjacent pop bands, fireworks or Rob Ruttan who, as Alonso, took the actors’ old adage of ‘’break a leg’’ to literal extremes on preview and now performs precariously perched on a crutch.
