NORTH VANCOUVER’S Kim Mayhew won the “Best Defen-
sive Player” award for her play in the Can-Am Softball Tour-
namen: held at Softball City in White Rock recently. Kim, 14,
_cempsted against 140 athletes in the Pee Wee division (13-
and 14-year-olds) to win this prestigious award. Supported by
her 11 teammates and coached by Ken Schmidt and Randy
Strychar, Mayhew’s solid performance as short-stop for the
. North Vancouver Cougars placed their team in sixth place in
the 10-team tournament. The Can-Am Tournament brought
together young players trom B.C. and the U.S. to play ‘‘A’’-
lavel batl. Scouts from various universities and colleges weve
on hand to evaiuate performances for possible athletic
scholarships.

Athletes preparing for duathion

THE THIRD annual Sum-
mer Evening Duathlon is
scheduled to take place on
Saturday, June 13, starting
at 6 p.m. in North Van-
couver’s Seymour
Demonstration Forest.

Athletes will be challenged to
finish before dusk. Their challenge
starts with a five-km run, follow-
ed by a 30-km cycle and then
another five-km run.

So far 200 competitors have
signed up for this year’s event.

The Summer Evening Duathlon
is the second in the Canadian En-
durance Sport Series of Events,
which is comprised of nine
triathlons and duathions taking
place in Langley, Harrison Hot
Springs Resort, North Vancouver,
Lillooet and Whistler Resort.

A mountain bike division is in-
cluded for athletes who use moun-
tain bikes for the cycling portion
of the race.

There is also a relay division in
which one athlete will do the run
segments of the race and the other
will do the cycling segment.

The Seymour Demonstration
Forest is located in North Van-
couver District at the north end of
Lillooet Road which passes by
Capilano College.
