Van Dusen Gardens are blooming

VANDUSEN GARDENS is
throwing off its winter blanket of
snow with blooming branches of
orange Chinese Witch Hazel
(Hamamelis mollis), Winter
Flowering Viburnum (Viburnum
farreri) and the ever faithful
yellow Winter Jasmine Gasminun
nudiflorum). *‘Its such a wonder
to see the emerging blossoms and
realize what a truly unique climate
we have here in Vancouver," said
Roy Forster, curator of VanDusen
Botanical Garden in Vancouver.

The Gardens, located at the
corner of Oak and 37th Avenue in
Vancouver are open daily from 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors are invited
to see at first hand the blooming
possibilities for their own home
gardens at this time of year (pro-
vided the weather stays mild).
There are also guided tours every
Sunday at 2 p.m.

A heavy snowfall and cold
temperatures can be very damag-
ing to the trees and shrubs in a
garden. VanDusen Gardens staff
must help its plants avoid damage
and to assist in any necessary re-

covery. These same principles ap-
nly to the home garden.

The Arctic front brought wind
chill that froze plant tissue. The
sum warmed frozen tissues quickly
and caused the cells to die, During
this type of freezing weather, pro-
tect valuable broadleaf evergreens
such as camellias and the less
hardy rhododendrons from the
sun by covering with a cloth sheet
or evergreen boughs.

This time of year, your left-over
Christmas tree could be chopped
up to make a protective covering
for any further cold snaps. Do not
use plastic sheets.

The snow provides a_ gentle
blanket which actually can protect
the stems and roots of shrubs
from freezing.

Don't be too hasty to prune
away branches which have gone
brown as many times new growth
will come from dormant buds.
Even if a shrub has died right
back to the ground, wait a full
year before removing it. Often the
shrub will regrow from the roots
and you won’t have to purchase a

new plant.

In the spring examine hedges
and bushes that are at risk from
snow damage. Shape hedges to a
point at the top to help them shed
snow. Shorten back long branches
to bushy side branches. This will
help retieve the weight and avoid
breakine Remove double leaders
from trees which may split under
the weight of a heavy snow fall,
