End of totalitarianism harbinger of Hungarian folk music rebirih of the totalitarian regimes in Hungary and Romania is a sweet vindication of sorts for five Hungarian musicians who call themselves Muzsikas. For well over a decade, Marta Sebestyen and Muzsikas have, as necessitated by Hungarian domestic political circumstance, been a voice of dissidence. Although the Hungarian Com- munist Party is on record as being the first to voiuntarily renounce exclusive right to power, the years following the failed revotution of 1956 were not the best of times to be a harbinger of renewed Hun- garian cutiural expression. The government espoused Soviet, and later, American cul- tural influences. Indigenous Hun- garian tradition was largely sup- pressed. According to North Vancouver choir member David Mailard, Giacomo Carissimi wrote Jephte in approximately 1645. The oratorio was famous in Carissimi’s time. The piece is based on the biblical story of Jephte (or Jephthah), an Israelite general who makes a vew that if he wins vic- tory over the Ammonites he will offer as a burnt sacrifice the first thing that comes to meet. him. Tragically, it is his daughter, Most of the oratorio dramatizes the dialogue between Jephte and his daughter, ending with her haunting lament as she wanders the hillsides bewailing her fate.
