FEBRUARY 1990 is Cable Televi- sion Month across Canada, ‘*an Opportune time to reflect on how far the industry has come’ says Shaw Cable manager Terry Medd. An open house at the Shaw Cable office and studio last year drew capacity crowds of North Learn puppetry PUPPETRY 1S an art that com- bines creativity, imagination, lan- guage skills and fun. Children tO to 14 years are in- vited to join instructor Marjorie Woods for a two-day workshop at West Vancouver Recreation Cen- tre, Participants will create a detail- ed hand puppet of their own, using a variety of materials. A mini- performance will complete the workshop. Dates are Saturday, Feb. 10 and 17 from 9 a.m. to noon. Advance registration is necessary and space is limited. Cail 926-3266 for more information. Changes made From page 41 Georgia Straight newspaper, *‘but we do get tired.”” Coupey burned himself out after five years of teaching nearly full- time while he was editing The Review. He returned last year on a number of conditions: that the journal hire a managing editer and that it be published twice a year instead of four. Leslie Savage now manages the office and Coupey has since been convinced to publish three times a year, “It’s impossible for one person to do it all,’’ he says, but for most of its 18 years, each editor has managed the impossible. Jantzen did it from 1984-89, working at everything from layout to selling subscriptions. According to Coupey, has always been a problem. With minimal funding from Capilano College (which con- tributes some support for produc- tion costs and allows the editor- in-chief leave time from his or her teaching post) from the Canada Council and the B.C. Cultural Fund, the remainder of the maga- zine’s revenues are raised through subscriptions, sales, and select advertising. Coupey fought long and hard to voost subscriptions (there are cur- rently about 800 regular subscribers) but failed to make The Review self-sustaining. Part of the problem, says Jant- zen, is the journal’s select appeal. “It’s aimed at a very esoteric au- dience.”’ Says Coupey: ‘‘lt’s very e¢x- clusive. {t doesn’t have general audience appeal. We won't get distributed in Shoppers Drug Mart and popular book stores don’t carry it.” : Coupey won’t make any prom- ises about what’s in store for series two. But he’s planning on publishing more special issues (devoted to one specific artist), more regular contributers, and, cautiously, he says he'll be work- ing toward a more thematic ap- proach. For its upcoming issue, The Review will feature a special see- tion on Governor Gener- al-nominated poet Roy Kiyooka, his new poems, photographs and unpublished writings on photography. ft will also include Vancouver il- lustrator Carel Moiseiwitsch’s Egyptian notebook drawings; col- umnists Brian Fawcett and George Bowering; new fiction by Robert Sherrin and new poctry by Evelyn Lau. money ‘OIvE BLOOD.
