Fat Man and Little Boy * (Paramount) Rated M (at the Capitol,
Richport, Station Square, Eagle Ridge and Willowbrook cinemas)

show, doesn’t it? Too bad it isn’t. These are the names

Fe MAN and Little Boy — sounds like a TV detective

of the bombs created to end World War I]. The rest, as

they say, is history.

Secluded in Los Alamos, New
Mexico, the top scientists in
America had nineteen months to
turn the theory of atom-splitting
into practice, The pressure was
tremendous, compounded by the
constant surveillance, telephone

tapping and barbed wire
enclosures. General Groves (Paul!
Newman) believed in “pressure
for results.” His gruff, barking
manner and table-pounding orders
were ways to get the “prima
donnas,” especially Robert Op-
penheimer (Dwight Schultz), to
produce. It worked. Little Boy was
dropped on Hiroshima and, three
days later, Fat Man fell on
Nagasaki.

One of the problems when deal-
ing with historica! events, is the
loss of suspense. Everyone knows
the outcome. The filmmakers try
