The Scottish native heads a quartet refreshingly direct in ap- proach. There’s Reader as the crystal-voiced chanteuse, guitarist-song veriter Mark Nevin, Simon Edwards on something called guitaron, a Mexican acoustic bass guitar, and Roy Dodds on drums. The songs on this sparkling debut are positive, romantic gestures and were sparingly re- corded in three weeks flat, as one-shot studio takes. The music, produced by Sinead O'Conner and U2 engineer Kevin Moloney, shuffles lightly along in soft-edged, swing-out jazz mode. This set of bizarre messages, the wacky handiwork of the Brooklyn, New York-based team of john Flansburgh and john Linnell, merits appreciation now. The two have stumbled through the junk-food culture of America, eaten heartily at the buffet and have returned to our turntables a platter full of quirky observations and incongruous musical styles. You want Cha-Cha? Polka? Cowboy? Psychedelic? Jazz? Pop? Eighteen cuts’ worth explores it all. The Johns are truly warped, but it’s a clever kind of madness defined by two guys having a lot of fun with words and guitars, ac- cordions and saxophones.
