A short trip from Vancouver either by car or train takes you to historic 100 Mile House, where stage coaches and horses and buggies plied the Cariboo Wagon Road until 1917. Day dog-sledding trips are the perfect way to turn back the hands of the clock and enjoy the pristine country of the Cariboo back country. Marvin Schmunk of the Red Coach Inn says that dog-siedding is challenging and relaxing — if you're feeling adventurous you can learn to drive your own team or be driven and just sit back and enjoy the sce- nery. The dogs travel on natural highways which are frozen lakes and streams. "I's not difficult to learn,” Schmunk says of dog-sledding. The dogs are all Alaskan malamutes, which are bred, raised and trained together. They respond to commands given by voice. The dogs average cight to 10 miles per hour with an empty or full load. A team of four dogs will pull one or two passengers and driver, anywhere you want to 0. For skiers, dog teams can carry your load while you travel light. Large wall tents and woodstoves are sup- plied as part of the trip. B.C. Rail travels to 100 Mile House from the North Shore. For information on special excursion rates phone 984-5246.
