(2 - Friday, January 22, 1988 ~ North Shore News This summer, go to France FOR TV producer Liz Engel, hast summer's vacation in France was both a good opportunity to get ac- quainted with a country she'd been wanting to visit, and fo brush up on her Freneh, “Pye been taking French for a couple of years and was interested in going to France, but | wasn't quite looking for an academic at- mosphere,"’ said Engel. After looking over various uni- versity programs, she settled on taking a French course through Capilano College at Paul and Babette Deggan's Summer Centre for the Arts. The centre is located in Montaigut-le-Blanc, a medieval hill village located amidst the or- chards, vineyards and sunflower fields of the Auvergne region. The Deggans offer 19-day workshops in painting and drawing or the French language in June, July and August. The workshops feature classes in the morning, and students are free in the afternoons to put their lessons into practise — on canvas or in conversation — in the beautiful surrounding area. Although Engel described her French course as being more like a vacation where you also get a chance to take French lessons, rather than an academic program, she was very pleased with the results.
