$23M TRUCK DEAL Entrepreneur Dear Editor: This has reference to your edition of Oct. 22, regarding the recent $23 million sale of trucks to South East Asia by Pacific Truck & Trailer Ltd. The management and. staff are to be congratulated for securing this contract. It may be of interest to your readers 1o know that this custom truck manufacturing business was started 40 years ago by Mr. J. ‘‘Mac’’ Billingsley, as principal owner and president. Pacific Truck has always built custom, quality trucks, primarily of the “off high- way’’ size for the B.C. logging industry. Over 20 years ago, when the local industry was stagnant, Mac Billingsley started to roam the markets of New Zealand, Australia and South East Asia, in search of new business. Girl Guides congratulated By visiting these countries, year after year, produc- ing a quality product and the necessary service to support the equipment, Pacific Truck sold trucks and earned export sales for Canada in these off-shore markets. This recent sale is no doubt the result of the fine ef- fort of Pacific Truck’s present management but it is also the product of the work and reputation of Mac Billingsley. B.C. needs more entrepreneurs like him who are prepared to compete in the world markets, instead of sitting in Canada and asking for government hand- outs. F.A. Grobb North Vancouver want 100-metre buffer Dear Editor: In response to the article Girl Guides continue NVD eagle nest fight in the News, Oct. 25, we are not. recommending a minimum buffer of 40 metres around the eagles’ nesting site. This was a figure given to coun- cil from the B.C. Ministry of En- vironment, When speaking to the ministry, | was told that they had grave concerns about whether this would be an adequate amount of space to ensure the eagles returning and successfully using their nest. Because of this, we recommend- ed that council support instead, a minimum buffer of 100 metres, with no development or activities whatsoever, as is recommended by several provinces in Canada with protective policies alrvady in place. Mary Huntington . Guider-In-Charge 2nd Seymour Co. Seymour school needed OPEN LETTER TO PREMIER VANDER ZALM You may not have heard, but the people of the Indian River area in North Vancouver-Seymour are in desperate need of a new school. ° There has been a considerable in- flux of people, as part of the orderly development of Seymour in line with North Vancouver District’s community plans. The houses are there, the roads are in, the children are ready and land has been set aside for the school. Your Ministry of Educa- tion, however, has failed to ap- prove this school apparently for lack of funds. In the meantime, all the children are crowded into other schools with a detrimental effect on their education. Now, I happened to read, Bill, that you have just found tax- payers’ money to bail out the B.C. Lions Football Club. It’s some- what puzzling to me that an avow- ed- free enterpriser would take money from the pockets of the or- dinary (taxpayers to give to a private free enterprise. I don’t remember your party doing this for the Whitecaps (to use an ex- ample). Be that as it may, I] sincerely suggest that you make up your mind whether you are a free enter- priser or an incorrigible hypocrite. If, as you claim, you are for free enterprise, then I suggest you take that money and use it for the pur- poses for which it was -collected from the taxpayers and that cer- tainly includes needed schools such as the one in Indian River.
