~ Friday, October 23, 1987 - North Shore News Mailbox __ = LONSDALE QUAY TOWER Reader questions NV aldermen’ Dear Editor: As suspected, after North Van- couver City Council gave one developer 90 days of secrecy (North Shore News, July 17), some aldermen are now prepared to make a major amendment to the official community plan for the benefit of that developer. Twelve days notice followed by a short council meeting the day after Thanksgiving hardly gave the citi- zens an opportunity to evaluate the proposal. The community plan was developed after public protests about some council actions. If it is to be amended it should only be done after holding a referendum, or be made an issue at the next election. Then, if approval to amend is given, the property under discussion should be open for all development proposals, not just one. Allowing this amendment ~will be the thin edge of the wedge. If it is approved €évery property owner in Hotel will Dear Editor: 1 am writing to express my dismay at the lack of uproar over the pending closing of the Interna- tional Plaza Hotel. The Plaza was a North Shore landmark for all its life and its passing is of no apparent interest to North Shore residents. North Vancouver has moved backward in the tourism business with the closing of the Plaza. There is no longer a farge (by North Shore standards) hotel in North or West Vancouver. . While we have some excellent smaller properties, they cannot at- tract the small convention or large meetings that spill over into other North Shore businesses. Also with the Plaza’s departure, sleeping room business may go across the bridge when the smaller hotels are filled. My experience has been that when an area loses business, it takes five times as News thanked Dear Editor: On behalf of the parents and gymnasts in the. Three-storey apartments will be demolished to make room for 20-storey ones. Rents for the stores on Lonsdale will triple overnight forcing many small businesses to close. Lower Lonsditle will become another canyon city. If this is what all the citizens of North Vancouver want they must be given an oppor- tunity to vote for it. The aldermen who voted for the 90 days of secrecy back in July, who gave a free hand to one developer and who now = seem ready to destroy the community plan with little or no input from the citizens, cannot help but have their motives questioned. Why the secrecy? Why | the hurry? Who will benefit? Who will profit?
