Housing starts reach
post-recession high

Starts totalled 2.883 units,
which was the highest mon-
thy starts devel since Auzust

annualized rate was 32.000

2,749 units.

gain 75 per cent.

In the first seven months
the average monthly SAAR
was 246,000 units. Last vear
total starts were | 200,000
units and this year's starts
are very likely to exeeed this
by a considerable margin.

As far as B.C. is concern-
ed. if recent performance
continues, starts could reach
27,000 units for 1987. Some
contraction is expected in the
balance of the sear though.

Mortgage rates are up by
over 100 basis points since
their low point in’ March
and this will begin to have a
negative impact.

A total starts level of
24,000 units for 1987 looks
achievabie.
