Doug Collins \. ® gel this straight @ “You give a woman an order she doesn’t like, and she’s liable to go off and cry.”’ THAT reasonable statement by Lt. Cmdr. Andre Perusse of the Canadian Forces Maritime Command has caused consternation in the ranks of the professional fems. Genera! Jancis Andrews of the North Shore Women’s Centre was the first to sound the alarm,. stating that Perusse should be fired -- or perhaps hanged from the yardarm. “By making public remarks like that he is discriminating...,’’ she said. On the federal front we heard from Sheila Copps, the Liberal MP who has a bigger mouth than Martha Raye. So keen is she on exercising her tonsils in parlia- ment that it was only with great reluctance that she took a.day off to have a baby. A real doll, is Coppsie. She announced that Cmdr. NV DISTRICT Suite owner wants Perusse’s remarks were ‘‘just another example of our sexist armed forces’’. Hold the phones, girls, while Doug does a dissertation on crying. Women and weeping are one. God made it that way. Whether Andrews and Copps weep I can- not say, but women are different from men in many things, one of which is their readiness to turn on the taps. Not that that’s necessarily bad. As Bill Shakespeare put it: O! Now you weep, And I perceive you feel the dint of pity; These are gracious drops. to bring happiness Dear Editor: Are we a police state? Do we have the right to barge into peo- ples’ property and private lives like detectives with a flashlight? The answer is NO. The previors and proposed in- spection of suites, which I might add are not at present illegal, is a violation of our human rights and is discriminatory. Is district council prepared to put single families out on the street? Apartment blocks don’t want kids; whole houses are too expensive to rent. Who will take them? Many basement suites in the distict are housing these unfortu- . nate individuals and are happy to do se. What will happen to our school district number count? It is low enough at present. If 20 per cent of the population is asked to leave, this will have a significant effect on child enrolment. Are there co-op housing units pianned to house these people in basement suites? I think not. What about the young people in their 20s, who, in our present economy, are finding it difficult to earn a decent salary? Apartment rental is so expensive that they cannot afford them. Basement suites provide a pleasant, affor- ’ dable alternative. What about our senior citizens who are living on a limited income and subsidizing their incomes by having others living in their homes? Many would not be able to afford the LARGE house taxes without this supplement. . Do we want our community to consist of upper middle-class, middle-aged individuals? Are we, as a community, so selfish that we all want our little private boxes all to ourselves? I think not. Classifieds Sell 986-6222 Has the district council taken these thoughts and considered them carefully? If not, | would like them to do so. As a homeowner in this district, I am prepared to share my little box with these minority groups and hopefully bring some hap- piness to some individuals. Name Withheld North Vancouver I'n not saying that men can't do a bit of bawling now and again. The above words were ad- dressed to men, and believe it or not, but even my scaly optics have felt the sting of salt. Winston Churchill sometimes wept, too. But Cmdr. Perusse is bang on. Give a woman an order she doesn't like and she’s liable to go off and have a good cry. Women’s tears can be a weapon, too. Not one that you can hurl at invading forces, alas, but a weapon nevertheless. And Copps put on a proper tantrum when girls couldn’t shoulder arms and parade with the Black Watch during the Queen Mother’s recent visit. If you ask me, the complain- ing Copps probably had a good cry over that. It is a fact, in any event, that men melt, flee or throw their hands up in ignominious sur- render when the old taps start flowing. Nicole Parton the consumer columnist has recorded how tears got her into the news game. Ap- plying for a job with the Van- couver Province, she burst out bawling during the interview, so terrified was she that she wouldn't be hired. And Managing Editor Merv Moore employed her. What else could he do? Can you imagine how much luck | would have if I burst into tears during a job interview? So- meone would send for the police. But women can weep when they apply for work and also when they lose it. Only the other night 1 saw a bunch of nurses on TV irrigating the earth in Saskatchewan because they had been fired in some government economy measure, They have my deepest sympathy. But don’t tell me about women and weeping, Misses Andrews and Copps. The Order of Canada for Cmdr. Andre Perusse, if you please. x« &k * Speaking of women and TV, I saw the splendid Fawn Hall testi- fying in Washington that Col. Oliver North was ‘‘every secretary's dream of a perfect boss’’. I would say that Miss Hall is every boss’s dream of a perfect secretary... There is a judge in Edmonton who told a welfare recipient and drug artist that he’s fed up with people spending money on illegal drugs and then asking for time to pay the fines. “You didn’t need time to pay when you bought that garbage,”’ said His Honor. ‘'Pay the fine or stay in (the clink).”’ A reader nominates the judge | for prime minister... Signs of the times: it used tu be that only fauity cars were recalled. Now, according to news reports, they’re recalling faulty condoms.
