know of that are involved in
sex offences,’’ says
Leishman. ‘‘But we have to
be careful. We can't go
around accusing people
without cause. But if parents
have any reason at all to be
concerned they should con-
tact me at the office.’

Leishman says a common
misconception held by most
people is that they
automatically have to lay
charges if they contact police
about possible sexual of-
fences.

“What we're up against is
the general disbelief in the
community that these sorts
of things are happening.
People don’t have to be
afraid to call police. They
can either call-us or come
right in to talk to us. We
want people to be aware of
the people looking after their
children,’’ says Leishman.
