Mimailbox Needless snarl on Lions Gate Bridge Dear Editor: Last week, while returning home from a movie downtown, I was chagrined to be stuck in traffic on Georgia St. A stalled car? An accident? Volume _ delays? We wondered for a full twen- ty minutes while inching on our way forward. Once on the causeway, the real reason became apparent: the Highways Dept. in its wisdom, had seen fit to close ’ the middle lane, making the Lions Gate Bridge effectively a two-lane bridge! All North Shore residents are painfully aware that the bridge is already hopelessly inadequate. Why, then, is the problem needlessly exacer- bated? Somebody tell me! Traffic snarls (esp* needless ones) make for ‘angry and impatient drivers. Such a driver is a higher acci- se dent risk. The dark, - wet weather the risk more yet. Furthermore, the gasoline increases wasted by all these vehicles idling for twenty minutes is a colossal waste of money, not to mention the pollution. It’s not every day one has the good fortune to run into a problem with such a simple, obvious and clearcut solu- tion! Open that third lane! John Ydenberg ‘North Vancouver Ree ‘out of touch’ on car insurance Dear Editor: 1 find MLA Angus Ree’s comments regarding ICBC (North Shore News, November 23, °83) not only reflective of the peculiar private-enterprise mind-set of Social Credit, but also out of touch with economic reality. It is difficult to understand how he, as chairperson of a committee studying ICBC, could fail to appreciate the relative savings in automobile insurance . premiums which -accrue to the drivers of British Columbia because of the existence of ICBC. That he could be ‘ adverse’ to ICBC because as a Crown Corporation it is a function the private sector can pro- vide’’ is shocking in the face of the obvious higher costs of private automobile ” imsurance. Mr. Ree’s comments high- light the basic problem with Social Credit economie.prac- tices: it is frequently oblivious to the relative costs and benefits of the causes it espouses, and worst of all, it does not serve the people of the province. O. Kempo North Vancouver Sask. visitors laud helpful, honest NV Dear Editor: My husband and I were re- cent visitors to North Van and want to tell you of a very happy incident. Being in the “sere and yellow leaf”’ age, | foolishly left my purse on a bench at a bus stop and discovered my loss only as | was getting on a ferry much later. The help I received was very _pbpreciated. The men at the B.C. Ferry and the ‘bus driver were wonderful ially David Taylor at the dock. To our great joy a young man, Gord Smith on Keith Rd. saw the purse and turned it in to the police, my money, etc. intact and refus- ed any compensation. We both think North Van is a pretty nice place to be if all the citizens are of the calibre of young men like David Taylor ers Gord Smith. Mr. & Mrs. G.M. Hewson Langbank, Saskatchewan. Thank you, says local Sally Ann Dear Editor: On behalf of the Salvation Army in the North Van- couver area | would like to thank you for your support tn co-operation with the North Shore News in arrang- ing an abundant amount of Free class with valid until Dec 31 1983 groceries for needy families. B.C. Ferries’ passenger fares should be the same as B.C. Transit’s fares. Then one would pay 75¢ on a bus, on SeaBus or a ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Bowen Island. ; , The SeaBus distance across Burrard Inlet is the same as the straight line distance from Horseshoe Bay to Bowen Island. ‘B.C. Ferry Corporation’ $s new Bowen Island fare is $1.50 one way. That is twice as much as the fare on SeaBus. And on SeaBus one has transfer privileges reaching as far as White Rock in the south and Co- quitlam in the east. Obvious- ly Bowen Islanders are being discriminated against. Putting everyone in the _G.V.R.D. on the same basis means a 75¢ fare to Bowen Island with bus and other transfer privileges. B.C. Transit and B.C. Ferry Cor- poration should get together and ‘‘rationalize’’ their fare structures. Then everyone liv- ing around the Lower Mainland would be paying the same rate. Jack Davis, M.L.A.
