have to fill up your tank
about once a year. Im-
possible? Not really.

Although at present the
average North American car
gets less than 40 miles per
gallon, there are: some
vehicles which can:achieve |
more than 1,000 miles per

gallon.

At the Fuelathon held
each year at Oakville,
Ontario, engineering
students and engineers
gather to race specially-
designed vehicles in a
competition to find out who
can go the fartherest on the

None of these
looking vehicles could be
driven on normal roads, but -
this competition is helping to.
point out new ways’ to.im-
prove fueleconomy.-

At the 1982 event, ‘the:
winning vehicle achieved an
astonishing 1,264.7 miles per
gallon. (2,023.5 kilometres)
and took top honours in a
field which included many
entries from universities and
colleges across Canada.
