‘West Vancouver City Hall is choked with expensive reports. If Dr. Collier ‘has a problem he just hires another consultant. Tax payers don't see these ex- tensive studies. They just Always wet Dear Editor: May I present a different view to that expressed by Mrs. LePage on her over- stated fears of living under a wood shake roof for ten years (your July 4 issue under headline “Time to Get Rid of Shake Roofs”). I lived very comfortably for five decades under a wood shingle roof on the west side of Vancouver and enjoyed the pleasures of a wood-burning fireplace to boot without ever thinking about or fearing the possibility of a roof fire. To compare warmer and drier weather conditions in ({southern) California to the dampness of the Greater Vancouver area is a somewhat misleading commentary for banning wood roofs. Everyone knows it rains around here and our feet and our roofs are wet most of the time — why I've hardly ever seen a “a mass of dry cedar kindling” used as roofing around these parts. B.C. is so dependent on its forests and the export of resulting lumber, plywood and paper products derived from our trees, including those functionally attractive and time tested wood shingles and shakes which Mrs. LePage so roundly and almost. professionally condemns. ~ I hope the lady’s fears will be lessened now as she lives under her new “everything- proof” synthetic roof and . that she has paid equal heed to obtain similar fire protection for all the fabric, furniture and clothing in her home. -For in order to maintain perspective consider that even greater fire hazards and risks exist inside the home and about the only thing that won't burn, given the right conditions, is a chunk of concrete under water. Besides,. the biggest cause of all fires ‘in North America has always been smoker’s carelessness. M. Welte Vancouver ANOTHER LITTLE “Benjie” needs a home. Sutcliff, G.J. Nielsen and now the Dino Rapanos Research. These wordy and ex- tensive documents all say the same thing. They write about the character and quality of life in Ambleside. They discuss the merit of tree planting and sign control, which is good. But — they all suggest three storey buildings to replace the existing two storey restrictions, and two to three storey Parking Garages. The real damaging part of all these. plans is to extend the Commercial area across . the railway tracks and to erect these buildings on the waterfront, this beachfront between. 14th and 16th to have office, commercial and parking functions, and to be called “Heritage Square”. Before 1944, in West Vancouver, one could build a commercial building on the waterfront, or in fact in almost anyother area. A few concerned citizens en- visioned the danger of this lack of zoning, and through the effort of these few, all commercial development was restricted to Marine between, 13th and 17th and 24th and 25th. Because of this restriction this small commercial area has become very valuable land. These same early citizens purchased the land for John Lawson Park at 17th. Developers could make a small fortune here, but let's not lose this potential beach and park by submitting to another Bureaucracy. G.E. Dear Editor: Bach day I read with dismay and frustration of the political posturing indulged in by all parties in the House of Commons, in Victoria, in both City and Municipal councils. Is it any wonder that voters are turned off, regardless of party? More and more it becomes apparent that our democratic political system is being prostituted at all levels. The name of the game is “Get re-elected” regardless of the con- sequences to Canada, the Provinces, the City of Municipality. Searching for an alternative Maybe the Western Canada Concept party isn’t the answer. Maybe the threat of Separation will not be sufficient to awaken Ottawa to the the degree of futility felt by a majority of Western voters. As matters stand, the country suffers a S-year dictatorship, regardless of which party promises the most and is thereby elected. Is there an alternative, or do we have to continue to put up with a totally inef- fective system? David H.
