THE DREAM DIES January 17, 1982 SECTION ENTERTAINMENT Tel. 985-2131 *AUTO -TV No Summer Games for North Shore TOMORROW, Janua- ry 18, is the deadline for applications for communities that want to host the 1984 or 1985 B.C. Summer Games. But when the office of the Provincial Secretary con- siders applications from the various municipalities that want to host the games in either of those years, there won't be any from the North Shore. North Vancouver City, North Vancouver District and West Vancouver all voted last fall to submit a joint application for the 1984 games. A committee was struck to prepare a joint application and to look into a possible site for a junior stadium m which to hold the games. But reality soon raised its ugly head as the committee, composed of staff members from the three municipalities, reported that applications for the games had to be in by January 18, and that they had to include the location of existing or proposed games facilities. _ “As it is extremely unlikely that even a final selection of the site will occur by the deadline, it is unrealistic to pursue the 1984 games,” said F.A. Smith, deputy City director of development and licensing services, in a report to his council. Deadline for the 1985 games is also January 18, he said. City council decided December 14 not to apply for the games in either 1984 or 1985. West Vancouver Municipal Clerk Doug Allan said the intent of the original motion was that all three municipalities would par- ticipate or West Vancouver wouldn't get involved. Therefore, City’s decision killed the dream of the B.C. Summer Games for the North Shore. NO STADIUM And with that dream, the vision of a junior stadium has also faded, at least in the foreseeable future. Neither North Vancouver District nor West Vancouver has taken any action since, but North Van City council has rejected a proposal to even begin a study of a stadium site. The study had a projected cost of $12,000, of which $3,000 would have been provided each by North Vancouver City and West Vancouver, and the other $6,000 by the District. The three municipalities had wanted a stadium with 3,000 to 6,000 seats, ar tificial turf, and training facilities. City Alderman Ralph Hall also suggested possibily covering the stadium. “Our weather can get pretty grim at times.” However, two months later he was telling council it shouldn't be looking at a stadium at this time. “Other things, such as the waterfront park, should take priority,”” he said in November. Smith suggested the North Shore look into hosting the games in 1986 but City Alderman Gary Payne said: ee I He FOR A LIMETED TIME ONL y Over the years Norche Down Conmfortans have established @ reputation for excellence Now for the first overstocked and have time to clear ever we ae some Ob Cul stock at greatly reduced prices Call for more information or ask for a FREE BROCHURE 731-2311 731-0713 ordic DOWN COMFORTERS - 1675 W. 2nd Ave., at Fir Street, Vancouver “I don’t believe there's a lot of support on the North Shore for the games.” The games would only have been a catalyst for the building of the stadium, he suggested. But Alderman Stella Jo Dean disagreed about the lack of support for the games. “The biggest point is to have enthusiasm and spirit in the community which money cannot buy.” Hall, speaking at a later mecting, argued there was “no ground swell of support for the sammer games.” Council shouldn't stand in the way of other com- ‘Warsaw RE STHURANT *Live Music” & enjoy the piano stylings of TYRONE MORINE every Wed.,.
