A North Vancouver man
who was found to be in
possession of a _ throwing
weapon used in martial arts
was, given a suspended
sentence Wednesday in
North Vancouver Provincial
Court.

Joseph Dalton, aged 32, of
102-320 East 3rd Street, was
charged June 25 after police
found the Shuriken ,a spiked
metal star, during a search of
his home.

After being found guilty of
being in possession of a
prohibited weapon Dalton
was sentenced by Judge J.D.
Layton, .

Layton said that while a
Shuriken could be used for

weapons offence

practicing the martial arts
“there was no etidence of
such purpose (presented) in
this trial.”

Defence counsel Jerry
Green said that someone
had left” the weapon in
Dalton’s home and that as a
carpenter Dalton “thought
that he could use it in his
trade as a design intrument.”

“I should warn him
(Dalton) that it is a
prohibited weapon and an
exceedingly dangerous one,
I guess, if used effectively,”
Layton said in passing
sentence. :

Layton gave Dalton a

conditional discharge and
placed him on probation for
-one year,

away areas of flooring and

fire between the second and

around 3 a.m.. Fire in-
spectors think the top of the
metal housing..of the shute
became so-hot that it ignited
the frame _ construction
around it and spread through
the area between the second
floor ceilings and third
