Above, for example, is a customized Tuareg recrea- tional Fiesta, now being produced by Sc Schwaben- Garage in Stuttgart. Based on a Ghia design, this spor- ty car has body protection for off-road use, with the standard front-wheel-drive chassis. But even the standard Fiesta has some pretty special features. I'll get to some of those in a moment, but the Ford Fiesta recently made the news as one of the most economical cars which qualify for the special tax reduction announced by the provincial government. New car buyers will pay only a two-per-cent B.C. sale tax when they buy cars with superior fuel efficien- cy ratings - that is, 33 miles per gallon or better. That works out to consumption of 8.5 litres or less per 100 kms. And right up there among the most economical cars in the reduced two-per-cent sales tax bracket is the 1980 Ford Fiesta manual overdrive model, with a rating of 7.8 litres by 100 kms. But what makes the Fiesta really stand out is its price: Most of its immediate competitors are imports whose prices are far higher than the Fiesta. In fact, this price differential is really the key factor, no matter what the sales tax is: “You've got to think of es before you worry about the sales tax,” said Keith Fant Ford Canada’s regional manager. “Is it cheaper for a buyer to get an $8,000 import and save $160 or buy a $6,000 domestic car and pay the extra tax?” But back to the Fiesta, which offers a surprising number of special features as standard equipment - in addition to its low price and good mileage. I don't have space here to list them all, but this will give you an idea: * Front-wheel drive with a 1.6-litre transverse mounted OHV cast iron engine. This results in a nearly flat floor to give front and rear passengers more usable leg room. * Twin-barrel Weber carburetor (the brand used in Ferrari), precisely calibrated for proper fuel metering for improved combustion. * Four-speed manual overdrive floor shift transmission, with aluminum-cased transaxle fully syn- chronized for smooth spirited action. * Rack and pinion steemnng to give direct control, especially important in sudden manoeuvres. * Diagonally linked 8.7-inch front disc and 7-inch rear drum brakes and MacPherson strut front suspen- sion, to help give additional control even when brak- ing. * See-through translucent containers which allow day-to-day sight checks of battery, cooling system, brake and windshield washer fluid levels. I could go on with many more of these features, but the best way for you to appreciate them is to drop by Brasso, check over the Fiesta for yourself and take a ne-obligation test drive.
