THE BIG BAND ERA could be returning to the North Shore if the

management of the building on Lonsdale, which formerly housed the
Totem Theatre, have their way. Aiming for a ‘classy cabaret,’ the group

if the Totem Theatre on
Lonsdale ever makes it to the
cabaret stage, it is going to
be one classy operation.

Men will wear jackets, if
you please, and swing and
sway, with their ladies, to the
pleasant sound of the Big
Band Era. All under the chic
decor that, at a cost of about
$250,000, has transformed
the once tatty cinema into a
glittering nightclub.

Geoff Procter is one of six
North Shore businessmen
who feel their proposed
Totem Cinema hasn't been
getting a fair shake.

*“City council has -already
agreed that this facility is in
a good location,’’ he says,
**and they have approved our
cabaret and five entertain-
ment licence.’’

But, he says, it is the
manager of the Liquor
Administration Board who
has to give the group its
pre-site licence. And Procter
said he can deimand that a
plebiscite be conducted in
the area in which case 60
per cent of the people polled
must agree to the granting of
the licence.

**The poll is going is going
to cost us about $5,000,"’
Procter said.

**But we will go along with
it because we feel that apart
from these people who are
pulling up a petition, there
are enough people who will
vote for it.”

have the wrong idea about
the club and the people
behind it.

‘*I don’t know where the
name disco came from, but it
certainly wasn’t from us,’” he
said.

‘*The club would be very,
very classy - although

relaxed,”” he said. |

‘*We went around to just
about every club
downtown area and picked
out the places that impressed

_ us the most. One of them was

Annabelles. It was classy.’’

That, said Procter, is the
kind of place he wants the
Totem to be. And there is not
another place on the North
Shore like it.

Procter said the club is
more than 275 feet from the

nearest residence and
doesn’t believe that noise
will be nuisance.

‘Our proposal to. city

council was for top manage-
ment, tight control and
pleasant surroundings,”* and
he added that means a tight
control on individuals coming
1o the facility and leaving the
facility.

Five of the six co-owners of
the club live and operate
businesses in North Van,
Procter said, and three of
them have been juvenile
soccer coaches in this com-
munity for six years.

‘We are all sound indivi-
duals,”" he said.
