From age 15 on, | worked five nights a week at the Keg restaurant,’’ he said, He went fron: dishwasher to cook and by age 21, owned his own Keg. “For a few months after I graduated from high school t thought about continuing my studies,’’ he said. ‘But once [ was independent and getting paid well to work hard, the idea of living at home and working to go to school didn’t really have much appeal.’’ Trimble then became a stockbroker before moving into underwriting: taking private com- panies public. That led naturally to his present business of financ- ing smal! businesses in exchange for shares in the companies. “My best financial move was investing in my own business,"* he said. “Although | didn't make much money from the Keg, my profit was the education | got —- plus the confidence of being able to manage in bad times as well as - good, “Sometimes people put too much emphasis on how much you make from a deal, and not enough on what the experience does for you in the long term.”” Trimble said ‘‘success’* used to mean making money ‘and while that’s still important, your life changes and success for me now means having healthy children.” Jorden, six, and Riley, five, were born before Trimble and Cathy married in 1989, Then they had Tessa, now two, and Landon, five months. Trimble stresses the importance of balancing the personal and fi- nancial sides of life, so | asked him about a typical day. “T get up between 4 and 4:30, go to my health club downtown by 5 where I work out, shower and shave,’’ he said. “i'm in my office by 6:30 and work until noon.
