IMPROVE UNDERSTANDING Industry adopts a school A NORTH Vancouver school has been adopted by a local corporation in an effort by both parties to improve rela- tionships and understanding between schools and business. In a presentation to North Van- couver School Board March 11, Windsor Secondary School vice- principal Don Peters told trustees he had approached North Van- couver’s Dillingham Construction Ltd. earlier this year,on behalf of his school, to see if a mutually beneficial relationship could be developed between the school and the company. The idea, he said, had been ini- tiated as a way to break down the barriers between schools and in- dustry. PROGRAMS SUCCESSFUL Similar programs in the United States and in Alberta had been very successful for all involved, he said. Peters emphasized that the Windsor and Dillingham relation- ship was in an early, undefined Stage, but said the potential for mutual benefit was very good. Peters said there was a tremendous opportunity for teacher’s to attain invaluable professional develop- ‘ment in areas of business educa- tion and social studies, and to develop overall insights into the current industrial marketplace. Peters said Windsor students could benefit directly from possi- ble on-the-job experiences within the office operation of Dillingham and on company construction Sites. PRACTICE SKILLS In turn, Dillingham could use Windsor as a place for the com- pany’s younger executives to prac- tice presentation skills and to study the school’s application of com- puter techniques. “T think there would also be the for the kids (with this coupon) $350 per '4 doz. muffins $6.60 per 1 doz. Dillingham’s director of person- nel and labor relations, Larry Sinclair, said Tuesday that both parties had agreed to move very slowly in developing the school- company relationship. “The whole thing is really exper- imental at this point, nothing has been established as yet. We are just going to see what happens, but there’s no doubt it could be a roar- ing success for both parties.” Calling the program an excellent idea, trustee Dr. Ross Regan said it was important for students to get “a window on the working world’’. Regan added that Dillingham in- ternatisnal scope would also educate students in the modern marketriace, “‘and show them that B.C. conipanies are not just com- peting locally.” 13 - Wednesday, March 26, 1986 - North Shore News ONLY A FEW BIG ONES LEFT Top Quality “RUGS FROM INDIA’”’ 10’ x 14’ to 14’ x 20’ to be cleared at 72 PRICE HOLAT HOUSE CARPETS LTD. 2300 Granville St. 736-8337 + wi | From the school’s point of view, .
