SHORE SENIOR HOCKEY Canadians charge into first CANADIANS clinched first place in the North Shore Senior Hockey League with a 7-5 shootout victory over Firefighters recently. The teams traded first-period markers by John Payne of the Cana- dians and Frank Hawrychuk of the Firefighters. Murray Chatwin gave the Firemen a brief lead midway through the second, but Canadians roared back with three goals in two minutes by Payne, Mel Melnechenko, and Steve Paquin. In the last four minutes of the period, Firefighter tallies by Ross Morris and Rick Goluboff were matched by Canadians’ Payne completing his hat trick, and Lan- ny Gregory. Ken Francis narrowed the margin to one goal midway through the third period, but Dan Romaniuk notched the clincher with three minutes left in the game. In other league action the Drillers and Old Buzzards skated to their fourth consecutive tie game, 3-3. Buzzards built up an_ early first-period lead on goals by Aimie Lehouillier and Jim Barabash. Val Donovan added another ear- ly in the second. Lehouillier had several other good scoring oppor- tunities, but was stumped by Driller goaltender Keith Gibson. Drillers began picking away at the lead, however, with Brian Wallace scoring a pretty goal midway through the second, and Rene Marleau tipping in Rick Walton’s pass late in the period. The tying marker didn’t come until the final minute of the game, when Guy Robinson drove the puck behind Keigh Major. Elsewhere the Old Crows built up a 3-0 lead, but couldn't hold on to it, settling for a 3-3 tie with Warriors. Terry Anderson scored in the first, and Ron Brown added two in the second for the Crows’ lead. Terry Anderson of Old Crows continues to lead goal scorers with 16, one more than Goluboff. The goaltender’s race tightened, with Garry Halls of Canadians at 3.25 marginally ahead of Keith Gibson (3.31) and Keith Major (3.46). Guy Robinson leads the penalty parade with 24 minutes.
